Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: linux-generic
I have an ati rs480 based chipset in my laptop (msi ms-1039) and
ata_atiixp will often (like almost every boot) crash with drive not
ready errors when the kernel tries to set up the drive and enable dma
(happens with nodma flag too). Leaves my laptop in an unbootable state
(laptop keeps rebooting at post or so before screen even comes on -
every 2 seconds) until I pull both battery and ac. pata_atiixp does not
have this problem at all and I've been using 2.6.19 w/ it for quite a
while...
The problem is somewhat known to others who have the same hw:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Gentoo_install_on_MSI_1039 under the booting from cd section. Similar problems were noted on other forums such as notebookreview.com. It has actually been getting worse since 2.6.14 for me (used to not be 95% of booting attempts, more like 10%), I don't know about others. I can assure it's not the hd. Had the drive rma'd and tried a friend's of same model - same problems.
** Affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: Unconfirmed
