I'm rejecting my own bug report based on the following:
a) I was using APM at the time, and it is recommended to use ACPI on
this machine (refer to
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_make_ACPI_work#ThinkPads_on_which_it_is_recommended_to_use_ACPI
for example)
b) under ACPI, I have no problems whatsoever along these lines (there
are others, they've been reported)
c) the bug was occuring under Dapper, and I now running Feisty and won't
be looking back, so I can no longer reproduce the bug.
FYI re point (a) - when booting with ACPI (via acpi=force), the system
is more responsive; under APM it is somewhat sluggish, this may have
something to do with interrupt handling. Or not. Just thought I would
mention it.

Status: Unconfirmed => Rejected
