it wasn't a custom kernel.  it wsa th ubuntu src's with the stock
ubuntu config unchanged, with kernel dev programs from the ubuntu
repositories.  I only changed the config afterward to get rid of this
driver, then it compiled just fine.

Nice job taking a month to get to it though,
