Okay, I have a bit of an update. I was able to plug in an USB wlan adapter to get at the online synaptic repositories, and when I downloaded the ndiswrapper-1.18 package I no longer received the error message. -- fails to load module after edgy upgrade https://launchpad.net/bugs/66016
