[Bug 46466] Hard crash, "X" in middle of screen, on startup

Public bug reported:

Machine: Compaq 1675 laptop.
AMD K6
video: agpgart: Detected ALi M1541 chipset

Normal boot crashes hard every time.
Booting in recovery mode allows starting X (and running as root, of course), and this is being written on the machine in question running in recovery mode.

"Hard crash" means no response to any key, any click, or any mouse
movement: locked up.

I'm sure you'll want more information if this is the first report --
just tell me what.
