Public bug reported:

just this week I decided to give linux a try, but I've been having some trouble
installing it. Tried Fedora and knoppix, then finally I was able to get ubuntu
to install. When trying to boot up Ubuntu it just stops at "starting hotplug
subsystems", When running in safe mode I get errors like kernel panic - not
syncing:fatal exception in interrupt or attempted to kill init. just by messing
around I was able to figure out that when I go into my bios and switch to my
onboard ubuntu loads up, and the other distros worked as well. I like ubuntu
the best so i kept working with it, following howtos and such online to get
video drivers up and running but nothing works(even tried through automatix),
nvidia drivers actuall make it so when I switch back to onboard video and boot
up ubuntu, I can't get into gnome(something about X configured wrong) and since
I'm new to linux I get frustrated at the command promt and just do a new clean
install of ubuntu. I've tried 2 different pci cards and I've also updated the
bios and everything else I can think of. All I've done is add ram and a video
card to it, here's my computer:
Dell Dimension 2350
1.8 Ghz p4
1 gig ddr ram
60 gig hd
geforce 5200 or ati radeon 9200

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Medium
         Status: Needs Info
