[Bug 48896] Thinkpad x31 hangs on mounting root

Public bug reported:

I recently installed dapper on a Thinkpad x31 using the live cd.  I
installed it using the DVD drive in the docking station.  Everything
seems to work except that it hangs on mounting the root partition if the
laptop is not connected to the docking station.  Everything works fine
if it stays connected to the docking station, but that defeats the
purpose of a 12 inch, 3 lb laptop.
