[Bug 63466] Dapper: Kernel update wipes out grub settings

Public bug reported:

I realize that adding a new kernel needs to update grub/menu.lst. But
the update script is deleting things it shouldn't.

As part of working around a serious bug (that I have reported, but which
has been ignored) in your installer, I had to manually add grub to the
boot block of my secondary drive on my software RAID1 array. In
addition, I had to make a change to grub/menu.lst.

The change I had to make was to add this line:

fallback 1

Just below where it, by default, says:

default 0

If I had not caught this, it could have potentially become a problem for
me at a later date when a drive might fail.

[What's scary is that I only caught this because of a bug in adept that
requires me to "show details" when installing certain packages (like
flash).]

I'm not sure why this happened, but when the kernel installer is going
to do nothing more than insert some entries for a new kernel, there is
no reason why it should wipe out anything in the file that has nothing
to do with what it's inserting. Importantly, my change is NOT within
the boundaries of the automatic kernel list.

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
