Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mkvmlinuz

The Cirrus Logic CL5446 is the embedded Video hardware in one of the
Compaq ProLiant 1600 models.

As soon as vmlinuz is loaded, the screen goes BLANK (What I call the
Black Screen Of Death - BSOD [I pronounce it: "Bee Sod"]).

In fact, you should see a graphical screen asking you to choose a
language.

This same behaviour occurs on the Live, Alternate & Server CDs.

This is a hard error (Occurs every time).

There are multiple variants of the Compaq ProLiant 1600 Model. This
particular one has the'"P8" BIOS, dated 11/08/2000 (Nov/08/2000). The
System Configuration Utility reports an "Embedded - Cirrus Logic CL5446
VGA Video Controller"

I also have a ProLiant 1600 with the "E34" BIOS dated 04/19/2000
(Apr/19/2000). This machine's System Configuration Utility (Same
version as the above machine) reports an "Embedded - Cirrus Logic VGA
Video Controller" (NB: No 'CL5446' designation on this machine).

The machine with the 'E34' BIOS does NOT exhibit this problem. The P8 &
E34 machines have different BIOS software, and both are patched to the
Latest version.

Both machines have the same amount of Memory, and SCSI RAID-5 Disk
array. Both have Dual Pentium II processors (The E34 are 300MHz, while
the P8 are 450MHz). The 'P8' machine has a Smart-2/P RAID Controller
installed, while the 'E34' machine has a Smart-2DH RAID Controller
installed. I have sufficient spare hardware to fit either controller
(or matching controllers) into both machines, if that would assist in
resolution of this problem.

I am happy to perform additional testing, or supply further information
(If requested), so that this problem can be resolved.

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
