Same for me! Dapper worked perfectly at the end. Just edgy is not
shutting down. I am getting more and more dissatisfied with my Laptop
and Linux either.

I don't understand why these things are getting so less attention from
the kernel hackers! If they really want to conquer the desktop, this is
what counts. Does not seem like the killer feature but this is what
makes Ubuntu and Linux in general look like something assembled by some
teenagers in their garage rather than a highly professional highly
secure first grade OS.

The desktop user does not understand anything about the architecture
under the hood, but he recognises that his Laptop is neither shutting
down nor hibernating correctly (but the great Windows does)!

By the way, I vote for replacing swsusp by suspend2 in the mainline
kernel and in the Ubuntu kernel even sooner!
