I have installed Kubuntu Edgy from scratch and the problem happens too
with the fresh install. I've found this post:

that describes the same problem. Since kdm doesn't make a sound when
presenting the login screen, the problem is unnoticed until after login.

Please advice on what hardware reports would be meaningful.
