[Bug 36596] Re: system freeze after clicking task manager trash icon in "pan" newsreader

I have managed to get my system stable now running Edgy. I have modified
my xorg.conf with the attached settings, and have been playing with the
recommended defaults as you can see. I am so close to getting this
completely sorted that I'm getting excited!

Whether Paul's patches have made it into the currently release, I am not
sure, but the system doesn't crash using 24bit or 16bit. However, if I
select 16bit I can get 3D accelleration working, but not with 24 (DRI
says dynamic memory allocation failed). Further to this, in 16bit mode
(with DRI enabled and 3D for the first time on my Vaio Z1) Firefox and
Opera crash whenever I visit a flash site. When in 24bit, not crash, but
no 3D.

Now, I'd really like to have both (well who wouldn't) or an easy way to
change without rebooting? Is there a way to change when the memory
allocation (using APGart) is performed, because 32MB is allocated
succesfully when in 16bit, but nothing in 24bit.

Looking at the logs, it would appear that the memory allocation is
happening after the selection of the colour depth. If this could be
changed, then perhaps it would work? (Just guessing)

Cheers

Adam
