TLE, you have to do precisely what I wrote, use chroot /root. Quash and
Scott, can you also try disabling dri and glx?

About Safe Graphics Mode, I don't think it has any effect, at least on
ati cards. From looking at /var/lib/dpkg/info/xserver-xorg.config it
seems broken - the boot option xforcevesa which has been set by the boot
menu is practically ignored by this script. I got the same xorg.conf
anyway when I tried it, and the ati driver was used.
