OK, also running AMD64 with ATI Radeon 9700XT and having the black
screen + lockup issue on the Edgy liveCD.
I have however found a reasonably simple set of steps that seem to get
me to a VESA desktop. They are:
1.) In boot option on LiveCD boot screen (F6), add:
2.) Boot the CD, and wait for the (initramfs) prompt. At the prompt do:
mv /root/etc/X11/xorg.conf /root/etc/X11/xorg.conf.disabled
3.) At the prompt do:
4.) The system continues to boot to a VESA based desktop.
Note, I have however also managed to get the ati/radeon driver working
(after a fashion) as well. It seems to me this problem has something to
do with hardware acceleration as the radeon driver works for me
providing I disable acceleration.
To restart the X desktop with the ati driver, you could do the
1.) Open a command shell using the menu ("K"->"System"->"Konsole")
2.) Get a root shell by entering:
3.) Generate a new config file by executing:
X -configure :1
4.) Move the new config file to the appropriate place by executing:
mv /home/ubuntu/xorg.conf.new /etc/xorg.conf
5.) Edit the new config to disable acceleration, execute:
Go down to Section "Device", find the comment line that looks as follows:
#Option "NoAccel" # [<bool>]
and change it to
#Option "NoAccel" "True" # [<bool>]
6.) On my machine I'm using a PS2 mouse, and /dev/mouse is not symlinked etc, so I have to fix this too. I have to go to section "InputDevice" and change the line as follows:
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
7.) Save the file and exit the eidtor by pressing: Ctrl-X, Y, Enter
8.) Press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the X server and restart it. It
should come back up with the new configuration using the radeon driver,
except without acceleration. (I find the fonts look better with the
Hope that helps. If anyone wants me to do more tests or anything then
let me know.
