Having read the Xorg.0.log this looks like the following:
1. Xorg not starting in the built-in LCD but the external display: bug #22985 . The "MonitorLayout" workaround applies to that bug, as well.

2. deactivating bootsplash makes consoles work again: bug #64787

I am not sure why the resolution is not set up properly, the log file
doesn't suggest any problems in that regard.
