So it looks like the problem I was having with hibernate was bug 42299.
>From reading that bug, if I did a fresh install from the latest dapper
install CDs, the resume partition stuff would be configured correctly.

If anyone else is having trouble with hibernate, they should check if
/etc/mkinitramfs/conf.d/resume exists and has the right value.

I did not have to install the "hibernate" package that some other people
mentioned earlier in this bug.
