I installed Dapper RC onto my home computer, and using lspci I now know
that my home computer's ethernet chipset is the same one in my work
computer! :

So the common thread is the ethernet chipset.  And when I have my home computer use its nVidia-supplied ethernet controller, everything works great. (The nVidia controller didn't work under Breezy, which is why I had the additional ethernet card installed.)
