The best solution would be to provide a second location for local
firmware files. Currently when ever the kernel is updated to a new
version the old firmwares are ignored.

it might be a good idea to patch the kernel to look in
/lib/firmware/$(uname -r) and if the firmware is not found then look in
/lib/firmware/local (or something alike)
