Since I couldn't get Breezy installed on that particular machine, I used
the following CD image:

Ubuntu 6.06 Beta 1 - released Apr 20 2006

and it installed (nearly) perfectly (at least, this bug didn't happen).

I have been updating daily since then (rebooting each time it tells me
to) and this bug has not re-occurred.
