I have this error too. 
Kernel is 2.6.16.16
About ipw3945-1.0.3
I have tried with gcc version 4.1, 4.03 and 3.4.6 (kernel compiled with gcc 4.1 i686)

Ariel: What version of gcc are you using?

The error is
/ipw3945-1.0.3/ipw3945.h:1978: error: array type has incomplete element type

I think its a problem with the ipw3945-1.0.3 source. 
The declaration of struct is wrong, and does not conform with the standard.
