[Bug 44332] device nodes not being created for external usb harddrive

This has happened on both Ubuntu Breezy, Edubuntu Dapper and Ubuntu
Dapper.

Steps to repeat:
plug in USB hdd
turn on hdd
kernel spits out text into dmesg
no device node is created

This device is on loan to me for to try and fix this (i am told it came
with drivers for windows fwiw).

I will attach the output of dmesg
