With kernel 2.6.15-22-amd64-k8, the computer no longer hardlocks when taking down the interface. The general stability of the connection has also improved, although there are still clearly bugs. For instance, pinging the default gw gives me several packets back, and I sometimes have trouble associating with an AP.

Ndiswrapper is still a better alternative for me, but I guess this bug is at least 3/4 fixed. I'll leave it up to you whether it should be closed.
