Booting Windows can often tickle a firmware or register reset, yes.  It used to be the only way we could get Daniel's NIC on his amd64 machine to reset itself after it got wedged (which would happen after a few days of heavy use)

As for the LRM failure, I'll be all over it like a (insert tasteless simile here) in the next day or so, since I can also reproduce it here.
