I can confirm that:
sudo modprobe ipw3945
works on 2.6.15-22-686
and then I had to manually:
sudo cp /sbin/ipw3945d /sbin/ipw3945d-2.6.15-22-686
sudo /sbin/ipw3945d-2.6.15-22-686 --quiet
To bring up the eth1 interface. Not sure if this should be working automagically or not.
