After several different tests, I have come to the conclusion that the driver in Dapper works best (despite having to edit the /etc/network/interfaces by hand to avoid the crash associated with the GUI).

I've also reduced wear on the device itself by using a USB Mini Hub as an extender:

Since installing it into that, I've had less problems with stability.
