[Bug 38773] During startup and shutdown, screen is distorted

Description:
During startup, vertical lines appear approximately every 20 pixels.
Here is a screen capture:

This has been true for Warty, Hoary, Breezy, and Dapper (I've tried
Flight 5 and Flight 6).

Shutdown text is also distorted in the same way.  In Breezy, shutdown
text looks like this:

In Dapper Flight 6, specifying 1600x1200 resolution fixes the bug.
However, this should be detected automatically.
