Just in case my initial report wasn't clear, the linked bugzilla.kernel.org item contains a patch to an early version of 2.6.16 which fixes the problem. -- 2.6.1[3-5] doesn't support merlin u530 cards dues to broken ppp support https://launchpad.net/bugs/42578
