Public bug reported:

Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: Medium
     Assignee: Ben Collins
         Status: Needs Info

Description:
I first tried a dist-upgrade from Hoary to Breezy. In Hoary, sound worked perfectly. After the upgrade, I'd be
listening to music, and at some point, the sound "froze" and repeated a short loop of noise until playback was stopped.
Resuming playback would not work. Running 'sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart' or 'sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset'
does not fix the problem. Reboot (cold or warm) also doesn't solve the issue.

I did a fresh install of Breezy, which got things function again, but after a few minutes, the same issue cropped up
again. If I try to run alsamixer now, it errors with "alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file
or directory". My ~/.asoundrc is empty. 'cat /proc/asound/cards' produces "--- no soundcards ---" . However, lspci -v
does give:

0000:00:0d.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 02)
Subsystem: Ensoniq Sound Blaster 16PCI 4.1ch
        Flags: slow devsel, IRQ 5
        I/O ports at a000 [size=64]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 1

So the card is there. What changed regarding ALSA between Hoary and Breezy?
