Oh, if the package isn't even installed, that would explain why the modules aren't there (doesn't adequately explain why the rest of the files still ARE there, mind you)...

Sascha: I assume that you've since recovered the system?  If not, you really want to run (when you're sure you have enough space to do so) "dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.12-10-386", which should happily create a working initramfs for you again.
