Yeah, I think I even phrased the summary that way :)

vga= is not required, as I said, no other options are needed than root=, ro and noapic. In fact the "F4" (?) selection only contains "VGA", so I cannot choose anything else. (This laptop's LCD is 1680x1050 BTW.)

Then the installer works, and adds noapic to the grub config, and later reboots work.
