I have a VAIO VGN-A117S, which is a predecessor of the A497 (same keyboard, screen, etc., but slower processor). It's running Ubuntu Breezy, and all packages are up-to-date, including acpi.
Shutting down the system (either to powerdown or reboot)  exits X, stops all services, and results in a blank screen. In this state, the system remains powered on, but is unresponsive - even to ctrl-alt-del. The power button must be held down for several seconds to force a hardware power-off.
