Ok grub (and no doubt liveCD menu) access keyboard through the BIOS. And
even though I can use the keyboard in the BIOS, there is a setting for
"turn on usb keyboard" in there. Very confusing for the usb keyboard to
work in BIOS and not to work with programs accessing it through the
BIOS.

That's going to suck for some people trying out the liveCD who don't
have their BIOS configured.

At least it doesn't suck as much as for this guy:
