The LiveCD (working version) has this in it's /proc/modules
via_rhine 23940 0 - Live 0xc0947000
mii 5888 1 via_rhine, Live 0xc088e000

The non working local install has this:
via_rhine 25988 0 - Live 0xc0b38000
mii 6528 1 via_rhine, Live 0xc0979000

Not sure if that helps, but I'll keep looking for other differences..
