I'm having this same problem "MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer..." hang after upgrading from Breezy to Dapper.  
My system is a ST20G5.

acpi=off: bypasses the above error, but then it appears to hang while loading X-windows.,
pci=noacpi: bypasses the above error, but then it appears to hang while loading X-windows.
noapic: causes a; "<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" error.
noapic nolapic: causes a; "<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" error
noacpi noapic: causes a; "<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" error.
noacpi noapci nolapic: bypasses the above errors, but then it appears to hang while loading file system.

My system is now a brick after upgrading.  How do fix this?
