I have an Asus A8V (w/64-bit AMD 3200) and removing plptools was the fix
that worked for me too.

I have just acquired an Asus K7V which I've been having serious
*slowness* problems running the Ubuntu install CD. I thought it might be
due to only having 128Mb RAM, but perhaps this plptools problem is
aggravating that too. Not sure how I'll disable plptools in
'live'/install mode, but I'll try anyway. I will see if it displays the
same problems with and without plptools if/when I get Ubuntu installed
and running normally on it.
