when i not err the xorg driver (xserver-xorg-driver-savage) is the same
under flight 7 (working) and final (not working) ubuntu. so i do not
believe it is the critical one.

it is the kernel. with version <= 2.6.15-22.34 it works and with a
greater version it does not.
