No, it's not impossible, as noted, acpi=off works. What I need to find
out is if it's only a portion of the acpi subsystem that is causing it,
so we can disable that portion on this type of machine.

If you can reproduce it, please add libata.noacpi=1 to your boot command
line and test that for me. Also try acpi=noirq.
