For completeness sake I've now also tried the following testing
procedure:

1) sudo modprobe -r rt2500

    result: ra0 (wireless) now no longer appears in 'Networking'.

2) sudo modprobe -r via-rhine

    result: eth0 (wired) now no longer appears in 'Networking'.

3) sudo modprobe rt2500

    result: ra0 now reappears in 'Networking'.

4) Deactivate and activate wireless network in 'Networking'.

    result: system freezes.
