Exactly. That is the culprit. If you remove the smart battery module,
you can restore sanity of your keyboard. I think this kernel got the
smart battery patch but not the embedded controller one. So the
workaround:

sudo rmmod acpi_sbs

But this will turn off battery monitoring too.
