I had this problem with the standard scheduler.
After I switched to cfq
(kernel        /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-23-k7 root=/dev/hda3 ro quiet splash 
vga=0x31b sched=cfq
in /boot/grub/menu.lst)
it is really much better. :)
Seems to be a problem with the standard scheduler for me.
