When I say that the CPU usage was nearly zero, I'm not kidding.  I was
watching it with gkrellm.  The metadata intensive stuff uses gobs of
CPU.  I've seen that before too.  I've read all about ReiserFS, and I
know how it behaves.  That wasn't what was going on.

What I was actually doing was untarring a 4.5 GB tar file, which
contained some 1/2 gig divx videos.  No small files.  Very little
metadata.

Stop worrying about the ReiserFS thing.  It's a red herring.  I
shouldn't have mentioned it.  People using ext3 are suffering the same
problem.
