Recompiling the 2.6.15-k7 kernel manually using make-kpkg and provided
dapper .config but unmarking SMP support solved this problem for me. [HP
Pavilion ze4334EA, AMD Athlon xp 2200+ (1.8GHz)]

Please do not compile future non-smp kernels with smp support.
