OK, tried changing the PNP OS and power management settings: no change.
Also fiddled with IRQ settings but the kernel just worked around them: I
always got the same errors as above.

Does there have to be a change in the kernel code, or in the Advansys
driver, to fix this?

(Would there be any point trying this card in a more recent PC??)
