This may not be a kernel bug after all ... muggins here decided to read the
Xorg.0.log and noticed that X isn't even loading the synaptics driver because it
can't find it -- and I've noticed today that ubuntu-desktop just gained a new
dependency

*wonders if installing the package fixes the problem <g>*
