fwiw: I looked into it and the scsi layer always says "Type: CD-ROM" even for
DVD drive.

but:

It seems that the MMC data coming from the drive is corrupted.  This is
obviously invalid data. (I have a tray, not a caddy, my read speed isn't 0x, etc...)

The code that acquires and decodes the MMC data is get_capabilities() in
drivers/scsi/sr.c
