Alas, the fix was too simple to be true. It does not work in Ubuntu, or rather I could not get it to work without some 
acrobatics - which I try to avoid as much as possible. Another potential fix is to use the newer Madwifi drivers, the 
Madwifi-ng subversion, as explained in http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=105437

Will try that next.
