I tried booting with the liveCD, the default mode (vga if I recall correctly)
seemed to work fine.  Other modes I just got a blank screen.  As far as I could
tell though, usplash was not used, so I don't know that this is a valid test. 
My current setup with Hoary also works fine when usplash is not installed.
