Comment:
This affects my Belkin 54g PCMCIA card as well. I don't remember this
being a problem with breezy, did the firmware binaries get pulled from
dapper due to legal concerns?

The current state of affairs: you can see the network device, attempts
to configure it (silently) fail, dmesg reports the firmware loading
error.

WISHLIST: It would be better if the user was alerted to this problem in
a discoverable way. A gnome notification would be ideal.

Example:

"A network card that requires additional drivers was detected, <click
here> for a walkthrough on this process"

At a minimum, this should open a local copy of the walkthrough in
firefox (to avoid the need for network access ;) to step them through
extracting the firmware from a dual-boot partition, driver CDs, or a
manually downloaded copy of the drivers.

Even better: kick off a tool that will automate this step (check for
dual boot partitions that already have the needed firmware and auto-
extract it), falling back to the paper wizard as needed.
