Some further information:

I patched a vanilla 2.6.15 kernel with the git12 patch which contains
the aic79xx (and aic7xxx) upgrade. I did this in both dapper and breezy.

In both cases version 3.0 of aic79xx loads and the system boots to a
gnome desktop. The seagate scsi hard disks appear to function normally
with the updated driver.

I then loaded a (written) cd-rw in the burner and in both cases (dapper
and breezy) after approximately a minute (during which the burner
appears to try to mount the cd-rw) I experienced a hard kernel lockup. A
manual power reset was required in both cases.

When the same action is performed with the 2.6.12 kernel in breezy the
cd-rw is mounted normally and nautilus displays its contents. So it
appears that it is the kernel upgrade not the hal upgrade which is the
source of the problem. In addition upgrading the aic79xx driver does not
help.
