Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31842

Affects: linux-meta linux-image-2.6-amd64-generic (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Enabling ACPI support in kernels above 2.6.9 kills parallel printer
support for some hardware configurations. Here's the link where the
kernel bug is discussed:

http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0601.0/1374.html

The workaround is to compile the kernel without ACPI support. This
will, of course, disable some features, but at least printing will work
again.
